A 2020 Apple Patent Filing Clearly Illustrated an iMac and MacBook with a Face ID Notch Described in Detail

1 x cover Notch in iMac

Days before the new MacBook Pros were introduced by Apple with new M1 processors, the rumor mill went into a frenzy reporting on rumor about the new MacBook Pros would likely introduce a display with a 'Notch.'

Funny thing is, a patent application that we reported on back in March 2020, or 19 months ago, covered the notch coming to future Macs (iMac and MacBook Pro). A feature that ws extensively detailed. Below are two of the key patent figures from that report.

Apple's patent FIG. 10 below illustrates a perspective view of a computing device (iMac #1000) that is capable of incorporating the various systems. In particular, the computing device includes a cavity that is capable of carrying operational components (e.g., camera, display, light pattern recognition module, processor, MLB, etc.).

For instance, during a setup of the computing device, the user may provide credentials associated with the user in order to provide biometric authentication of the user. In some examples, the credentials associated with the user may include a name, a date of birth, a surface profile of the face of the user, a depth map of the face of the user, profile of a cornea of the user, and the like.

Later in the patent filing, Apple added that "the systems and techniques may also be applicable to capturing face gestures and emotions, video chatting, generating emoji, encrypting data, unlocking the computing device, supplementing passwords, differentiating different users, and the like."

2 x the Notch for iMac & MacBook Pro

Apple's patent FIG. 1A above illustrates a portable computing device that is capable of incorporating the various systems, and in particular, includes a biometric authentication module that is capable of authenticating a user of the portable computing device.

So there's no doubt that Apple has the intention to eventually bring Face ID to Macs over time. You could review our 2020 report in full here.

Earlier today Patently Apple posted a report titled "The MacBook Pro's Notch doesn't support Face ID, yet." Funny how things just pop into your head at the strangest times. Hours after posting our earlier report, it popped into my head, wait a minute … didn't Apple patent something like this? Yes, of course.

Obviously the foundation of this patent is now a patent fulfilled, even though some of the patent is still to unfold over time – like most patents.
