Tianfeng International released its latest research report today. The main research project is next year’s iPhone lens and changes in the supply chain of suppliers such as Largan, and forecasts the iPhone camera specifications.

Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the 2H22 new iPhone will have 4 models, namely the 6.7-inch and 6.1-inch high-end models, and the lower-positioned 6.7-inch and 6.1-inch versions.

The high-end 6.7-inch model and the wide-angle camera of the 6.1-inch iPhone will be significantly upgraded to 48 million pixels (1/1.3"), so the ASP of the image sensor (CIS), lens and CCM will be significantly improved.

In addition, Kuo believes that this specification upgrade will significantly improve camera performance and promote AR/MR technology with Apple to provide a better AR/MR experience.

The Face ID Tx lens discards glass and uses plastic instead. Apple's AR/MR head-mounted display device uses 15 cameras, so the number of plastic lenses used will increase significantly.

The use of a 48-megapixel camera in the new 2H22 iPhone is conducive to a significant increase in lens ASP.

8P lenses benefit from improved yield and lower costs, and shipments are expected to increase significantly starting from 2022.

Lastly, the IT House report noted: "It's estimated that in 2023, Apple will adopt the periscope lens telephoto lens and the under-screen Face ID, and the lens ASP will be significantly improved."

While the camera upgrades that Kuo is predicting sound great, it's still a bit disappointing that it'll take until the 2023 iPhone to see a periscope lens emerge considering that Samsung already has this advantage.  Even Xiaomi now offers a primary GN2 50MP 1/1.12 inch sensor, an ultra-wide 48MP sensor and 48MP telephoto lens with 120x zoom and more. Here's to hoping that Apple will be able to accelerate their camera improvement scheduling.
