While a Periscope Camera Module was supposed to be ready for iPhone 11, a new Rumor claims that the Project is still ongoing
Back in 2018, prior to Huawei introducing their hot periscope camera lens that delivers fantastic zoom levels, Patently Apple posted a report that covered the CEO of Apple supplier Largan Precision talking up a new 7 lens module that they were hoping to ship to Apple for their iPhone 2019, iPhone 11.
While Largan Precision is likely still working on this periscope lens, Apple may have decided to look for another supplier who could deliver a periscope lens for a future iPhone much faster in order to play catch-up with Chinese Smartphone vendors Huawei and Oppo.
Today, the famed Ming-Chi Kuo has reportedly forecasted that Apple does indeed have plans for a future iPhone with, you guessed it, a periscope camera module.
Kuo reportedly believes that Korea's SEMCO (Samsung Electro-Mechanics) and China's Sunny Optical appear to be in the running for Apple's business for this powerful zoom lens that Apple fans want.
While Korea's SEMCO has been chosen to ship Apple a new autofocus motor for the iPhone 12, Kuo believes that the 2021 iPhone will come with SEMCO's periscope lens-module. The video below presents the periscope camera system from SEMCO. By the time it reaches a future iPhone, it's likely to be a more advanced version.
The video below is from JerryRigEverything. I've set the video to begin when Jerry gets to the part where he exposes Huawei's periscope lens. Jerry notes during his teardown that he thinks that "people are going to go pretty nuts when Apple comes out with it in a few years." Yes, Jerry, some of us will. The video was made public in April 2019.
Another video on this titled "Huawei P30 Pro: Periscope Camera is Insane!" is covered by Vooredatwork.com here.
Today, Huawei's "periscope camera" allows users to obtain praiseworthy 5X optical and 50X digital zoom. Huawei is likely to update their periscope camera later this year that could extend their lead over the iPhone's camera in the short run in respect to zoom.
Here's to hoping that the rumor of a periscope camera module coming to the 2021 iPhone comes true. This is a must have feature for many camera fans.
While my wife will be buying Apple's hot new iPhone 12 with 5G (if it comes with millimeter wave) for Q4, I think I'll put my purchase on hold until next year because I've wanted to see this feature come to the iPhone for years.
