Apple's design team went all out to protect the design of the 2018 iPad Pro with its new backside smart connector and yesterday they were awarded 20 design patents from the Hong Kong Patent and Trademark Office.
Unlike "patent applications" that provide the public with an abstract, summary and details of an invention, design patents published around the world are limited to only providing the public with design patent figures. No additional specifics of the design are made available.
Apple iPad Pro Design Patent #1
Below is the first of 20 design patents granted to Apple by the Hong Kong Patent and Trademark Office on Friday July 5, 2019. Technically speaking the design patent actually covers two patent designs numbered 1900086.2M019 and 1900086.2M020. The designs are identical except for model sizes (11" and 12.9") and so we're only presenting the one design (2M020) to save time and space.
Granted Design Patent Form for Apple's iPad Pro
Considering that there are 20 design patents we'll only present you with a single granted design patent form issued by the Hong Kong Patent Office. The only change between the forms is the patent number that is assigned. Therefore only one of the 20 forms is presented below simply to establish certain criteria such as the date that the designs were granted and the Locarno Classification which in this case is 14-01, 02 and 03 for all.
The Classes that Apple filed the designs under are defined as follows: Locarno Class Specifics: 14-01: Equipment for the Recording or Reproduction of Sound or Pictures; 14-02; Data Processing Equipment as well as Peripheral Apparatus and Devices; 14-03: Communications Equipment, Wireless Remote Controls and Radio Amplifiers
Apple's iPad Pro Design Patent #2
Apple's design patent 1900086.2M018 is simple line-art illustrating the TrueDepth camera that sits under the top face mask/bezel area.
Apple's iPad Pro Designs – The Remainder
The remainder of the design patents numbered 1900086-2M001 to 2M017 that are presented below follow the same line-art as design patent #2. Apple is protecting every aspect of the iPad Pro design.
For example, one design patent will emphasize just the camera which they do by outlining it in solid black with the rest of the design presented in dotted lines simply to illustrate the full body of the iPad Pro and where the part they're protecting sits within the total design.
Another patent, for instance, will emphasize the smart connector and another will emphasize the iPad Pro's speakers specifically and so forth. The list below confirms that in total there were 20 iPad Pro design patents granted to Apple yesterday June 5, 2019. There are 17 design patents below plus those presented earlier in the report.
