The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of 48 amount newly granted patents for Apple Inc. today. In this particular report we cover a major design patent win for the Apple Watch's Digital Crown along with utility patents covering Apple Pencil and the coded magnetic system for the cover of the iPad. We wrap up this week's granted patent report with our traditional listing of the remaining granted patents that were issued to Apple today.

Apple Granted a Design Patent for Apple Watch's Digital Crown

Today Apple was also granted design patents for the iPhone's Home Button (D778,905) the iPad Air (D778,904) and a power module (D778,835).

Granted Patent: Stylus Tilt and Orientation Estimation from Touch Sensor Panel Images

Apple's newly granted patent covers their invention relating to a touch sensitive device (iPad Pro) that can receive both inputs from a user's hand as well as inputs from a stylus that can be held in the user's hand and, more particularly, to methods for detecting the stylus' tilt and orientation based on touch images acquired by the touch sensitive device.

Apple's granted patent 9,569,045 was originally filed in Q2 2014 and published today by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Apple's newly granted patent covers their invention relating to various releasable attachment techniques well suited for portable electronic devices. More importantly, the patent relates to a magnetic attachment system includes at least a first coded magnetic structure. The first coded magnetic structure, in turn, includes at least a first plurality of magnetic elements and a restraining feature mechanically connected to the first plurality of magnetic elements. The first plurality of magnetic elements are arranged to form a first magnetic code. In the described embodiment, the restraining feature applies a restraining force to the first plurality of magnetic elements at a first position that corresponds to an inactive state of the magnetic attachment system. The magnetic attachment system changes from the inactive state to an active state only when the coded magnetic structure magnetically interacts with a second coded magnetic structure having magnetic elements arranged to form a second magnetic code that fully correlates with the first magnetic code.
