Later today Apple will be announcing their third quarter financial results in a Conference Call scheduled for 2 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. ET. Yesterday TrendForce reported that smartphone shipments in the calendar second quarter of 2015 grew 1.9% over the previous quarter to 304M units. Apple is likely to absolutely blow that growth number right out of the water later this afternoon.
The trend isn't looking good for Apple's competitors as TrendForce has now made a downward revision to smartphone shipment growth for the entire year from 11.6% to 8.2%. Why downward? It really boils down to Samsung's Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge's annual shipment forecast having to be marked down repeatedly.
TrendForce has revised Samsung's annual smartphone shipments downwards to 45 million units this year. Estimates were originally upwards toward 70 million, hence the downward revision of smartphone shipments.
Apple rode on the popularity of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in this year's first half and achieved a remarkably strong shipment result in the off-peak season. TrendForce's iPhone shipment forecast for this year continues to be very positive with a high growth of 15% upwards beating the smartphone sector overall.
We'll be reporting on Apple's financials later today.
