Apple Granted 34 Patents Today Covering Slide to Unlock Authentication, Movement Based User Interfaces & More
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially published a series of 35 newly granted patents for Apple Inc. today. In this particular report we cover Apple's original "Slide to Unlock" patent that Samsung was in-part found guilty of infringing last year. The other patent relates to motion based interfaces. We wrap up this week's granted patent report with our traditional listing of the remaining granted patents that were issued to Apple today.
Granted Patent: "Slide to Unlock" user Authentication
Apple's newly granted patent covers their invention relating to electronic devices with embedded authentication systems.
Apple's patent FIG. 4 noted below is a schematic view of Apple's famous "Slide-to-Unlock" feature for directing a user to authenticate prior to accessing device resources. Apple noted in their original patent filing that the display screen could include an option (#410) for unlocking the display. For example, the option may include a slider operative to be dragged across a portion of the screen. As another example, the option may include an option or series of options for the user to select (e.g., simultaneously or sequentially press several keys or touch several areas of display screen 400).
Apple credits ex-Apple Tony Fadell, Andrew Hodge, Stephan Schell, Ruben Caballero, Jesse Lee Dorogusker, Stephen Zadesky and Emery Sanford as the inventors of granted patent 8,943,580 which was originally filed in Q3 2008 and published today by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Granted Patent: Movement Based Interfaces
Apple's newly granted patent covers their invention relating to personal media devices and, more particularly, to movement-based interfaces for personal media devices.
Apple's patent FIG. 11 noted below illustrates an exemplary process whereby a user steps through or navigates a list of items displayed by an application on a media device by rotating and/or flicking their hand or wrist.
Apple credits Scott Forstall, Michael Culbert, Nicholas King and Michael Lee as the inventors of granted patent 8,942,764 which was originally filed in Q4 2007 and published today by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Apple Granted Two Design Patents Today
Apple was granted 2 design patents today. The first relates to iBook Author logo (D721,716) which was noted in the design patent as relating to Apple's registered trademark.
The other design patent granted today was for a "Display screen or portion thereof with graphical user interface" under patent number D721,731.
