On Tuesday, Apple launched iPads in Japan without SIM cards

10. News
It's being reported today in Japan that Apple Inc.'s Japanese unit has released an iPad without subscriber identity module locks, to allow users to choose their own service providers.

According to the report, "Users of the iPad, available at Apple stores and online starting from Tuesday, are able to use their devices overseas using local SIM cards.

It looks as though this will spill over to future iPhones as the "Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry plans to oblige mobile phone carriers to remove so-called SIM locks on handsets. The locks have been commonly applied to limit the use of smartphones and tablets to services by specific carriers."
