This data is erroneous. THis doesn't include all the stolen apps that are side-loaded onto android devices!

Google released newer versions of Nexus tablets the week after the Mini was introduced, so that's yet another factor.

In any case the change within 12 months has been pretty dramatic; while they remain very strong, Apple no longer owns the incredibly comfortable position they had. The numbers will eventually tell the story.

The article you point to states that the survey was done prior to Nexus 7, implying that the numbers will favor Android once Nexus 7 stats are accounted for. Yet the iPad mini is selling out everywhere and so the Nexus 7 will unlikely mean anything in the short haul. In fact, the iPad mini may increase Apple's stats.

It will be a very long time before Android app sphere actually catches up with the quality of iOS apps. Too tough but with more cheaper tablets coming up from Google and others, the ratio is sure to drop down in some time.

All of these data points must be kept in context. The iOS app ecosystem remains far and away superior to the Android app ecosystem for both device owners and developers. However, the ecosystem alone will not guarantee continued success. Witness this data point:

Tablet ownership numbers changed from 2011 to 2012 from 81% Apple/15% Android in 2011 to 52% Apple/48% Android.

And, per the article: "This survey was also conducted before the introduction of Google's Nexus 7 or Amazon's Kindle Fire HD."

iPad still more popular than Android tablets. Yep - even Google acknowledged their tablet strategy needs improvement; which they've already begun with. Just as the droid ecosystem on phones overtook the iOS based phones though, I suggest it's only a matter of time before tablets are on more competitive terms (app wise - hardware wise android is already superior (nexus 10, 7)).
