Hon Hai out to Beat Samsung

During Hon Hai's annual shareholders' meeting held on Monday, Chairman Terry Gou confirmed the deal with Japan's Sharp Corp. With Hon Hai's marketing and manufacturing strengths and Sharp's key technologies, the two will be able to defeat their arch-rival Samsung in the next three to five years, the chairman said.

There's no hiding the fact that Hon Hai isn't fond of Samsung. The Chairman was quoted by China Times as stating that he made it a lifetime goal to defeat Samsung, "a company with a track record of snitching on its competitors." He was referring to Samsung's action in 2010 of snitching on four Taiwanese companies in an investigation by the EU commission on price fixing in the flat panel industry. Samsung was exempted from the investigation by serving as a "tainted witness."

Interestingly, Gou told shareholders that their "Sakai plant also has an exclusive agreement with Corning Inc. He added that "his competitors will not be able to secure any such material if they wished to.

Hon Hai Group behind Technology in Microsoft's "Surface" Tablet

On Monday, Microsoft launched "Surface," a new line of tablets coming to market with the release of Windows 8. Earlier in the day, prior to Microsoft's event, Hon Hai Group, the world's largest contract electronics maker, said it had the advanced technology and high-definition displays that will be used in Microsoft Corp.'s new Windows 8 operating system.

One of the interesting pieces of information to come out of this announcement was that Chairman Gou revealed that Hon Hai had assigned two task forces to work with panel suppliers Sharp Corp. of Japan and Chimei Innolux Corp. of Taiwan on research into low-radiation, high-definition displays and eye-control technology.

It was rumored in 2009 that Apple had been buying eye-tracking technology components from a Swedish company by the name of Tobii who already has their "Gaze" technology ready for Windows 8. The news of Hon Hai researching this technology suggests that Apple may incorporate this technology in their hardware sometime in the future. Shades of such technology surfaced in our February patent report under the sub-header "Desktop Machines as Well."
