Apple Files Trademarks for Smart and Touch Instruments + Icons
On March 15, 2011, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office finally published five trademark applications that Apple had filed for earlier in the month. The applications cover two formal trademarks for "Smart Instruments" and "Touch Instruments." Additionally, Apple has applied for three Smart Instrument Icons including "guitar," "bass" and "keyboard." The filings cover a comprehensive if not sweeping list of product protections under wares and services. Notably, Apple has included "Toys" as a breakout category. In context, you have to wonder if Apple is eyeing the gaming and/or toy markets for a future game or app to compete with the likes of Guitar Hero and/or the new Guitarsmith. It would make for a great Christmas gift to go along with that shiny new iPad under the tree, wouldn't you agree? Time will tell. Updated August 9, 2011 with US filing information.
Apple's "Touch Instruments" Trademark Application In-Part
Apple has filed for five trademarks under numbers 1517556/57/58/59/61. Two of the trademark applications in-part for "Touch Instruments" and "Smart Instruments" are presented below for the purpose of verification.
Apple's "Smart Instruments" Trademark Application In-Part
Smart Instrument Icons
Apple has initially applied for three Smart Instruments icon trademarks covering the smart guitar, keyboard and bass. We may see the smart drums icon applied for in the not too distant future if not others such a tambourine for instance. Do you have any ideas for future touch instruments for the iPad? Let us know by adding a comment in our comments area below.
Update March 17, 2011: Apple's trademark application 1517562 for "Smart Drums" has been officially made public on the Canadian Intellectual Property's database just one day after the initial three smart instrument icons appeared. The numeric system would indicate that we could still see one more smart instrument icon appear in the near future covering application 1517560 which is missing from the numeric allotment as originally noted.
Update August 5, 2011: Apple has filed for both "Smart Instruments" and "Touch Instruments" under applications 010176428 and 010176394 in Europe. They filed both under International Classes 9, 15 and 28.
Updated Aug 9, 2011: Apple has filed for both Smart and Touch Instruments under applications 85388851 and 85388869 respectively. Both were filed under the single International Class 9.
