Apple Pounces on Lion, Mission Control & LaunchPad Trademarks

Just two weeks prior to Apple's Special Event that provided us with a Peek at Mac OS X Lion, Apple filed for two of their key trademarks in Jamaica: Lion and Mission Control. The third trademark application for "LaunchPad" was only filed the day of Apple's special event in Trinidad and Tobago. The three applications were then quickly filed in China and made public this morning. Apple filed their trademarks under a total of six International Trademark Classes covering them for such things as being an Application Service Provider (ASP), being a provider of education and entertainment services and covering all manner of telecommunications. Apple plans to launch Mac OS X Lion sometime next summer.  Update - October 27: Apple Files for new "App LaunchPad" trademark twist in Canada.

Apple asserts a claim of priority for Lion and Mission Control based on Jamaican application numbers 56646 and 56647, filed on October 6, 2010. The trademark application for LaunchPad interestingly was only filed in Trinidad and Tobago on October 20, 2010 or the day of Apple's Special Event. China's IP Office shows no application number as of this day for the latter trademark.

 

UPDATE October 27, 2010: A new Apple Inc. trademark twist was listed in the Canadian IP Office's database today. The twist rests with Apple's "LaunchPad" trademark which was also listed in the Canadian database under 1500401. The new twist is in an extra filing for "App LaunchPad" under application 1500398, which is shown in-part below.

[Apple] ... may file in specific countries initially and then use that as the springboard for priority into other countries like the U.S. at a later date (based on cost savings, procedural advantages in the foreign countries, etc.).

If they file in Jamaica, they are protected worldwide?
If so, looks like they are trying to stay under our radars.
