Weibo’s famed leaker ‘Digital Chat Station’ states that new supply chain news is claiming that the iPhone 18 series will be the first iPhone to use the 6-channel LPDDR5X with large memory next year.

Apple will playing catch-up with their Chinese smartphone competitors Huawei (Pura 70 Ultra), Redmi (Turbo 4 Pro) and OnePlus (Ace 2 Pro) who have already adopted 6-channel LPDDR5X.

A "6-channel LPDDR5X" configuration refers to a memory setup utilizing six independent channels of LPDDR5X memory, each channel capable of running data transfers simultaneously. This configuration provides significantly higher memory bandwidth compared to a dual-channel setup, which is common in laptops and some mobile devices.

Here's a breakdown:

  • LPDDR5X is a type of Low Power Double Data Rate 5X memory, known for its high speed and efficiency, making it ideal for mobile devices, laptops, and other applications requiring low power consumption.
  • Channels: In memory terminology, a channel refers to a set of data transfer paths between the memory controller (CPU) and the memory modules.
  • 6-Channel: A 6-channel setup would mean there are six independent pathways for data to be transferred between the CPU and the memory, allowing for more data to be moved simultaneously.

Benefits of 6-Channel LPDDR5X:

  • Higher Bandwidth: The most significant advantage is the greatly increased bandwidth, allowing for faster loading times, smoother multitasking, and improved performance in resource-intensive applications.
  • Improved Latency: With more data being processed simultaneously, the memory subsystem can respond faster to CPU requests, potentially leading to lower latency.
  • Scalability: While primarily designed for mobile and laptop applications, some higher-end systems might leverage this configuration to handle extremely demanding workloads.

Where it's used:

  •  Mobile Devices: While less common than dual-channel configurations, some cutting-edge smartphones and tablets might utilize 6-channel LPDDR5X for their exceptional memory performance.
  • High-End Laptops: Some ultra-premium laptops may use 6-channel LPDDR5X for their advanced performance capabilities.
  • Specialized Applications: Certain applications, like AI processing or high-performance computing, might benefit from the increased bandwidth offered by 6-channel LPDDR5X.

In summary: 6-channel LPDDR5X represents a high-performance memory configuration that offers significantly higher bandwidth and potentially lower latency compared to standard dual-channel memory, making it suitable for applications where memory performance is crucial.
