It's being reported that Google has started recalling an older mid range Pixel model. The company’s Pixel 4a was released way back in 2020 but it is now at risk due to one of the latest updates. So here’s what you need to know and why you should avoid updating your Pixel 4a.

Google Pixel 4a Recalled Over Battery Risks

Back in January 2025, the search engine giant’s began rolling out the Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program update to the device. This software update was set to ring a new battery management feature on the Pixel 4a. The idea was to improve stability of the battery’s performance on the aging model. However, it had the opposite effect as many users complaint of their devices seeing degraded battery life.

Some users were facing a complete battery discharge in mere minutes. So Google shared an update on the official support page that warned users regarding this update.

It stated that the update could lead to short battery duration and reduce the charging performance as well. Reports revealed that the maximum voltage was reduced from 4.45V to 3.95V, which marks a 56 percent reduction in battery capacity.

Days earlier, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) had issued an advisory that highlights this issue and even urged the user to check for overheating issues.

The ACCC also highlighted the recall information, stating that the overheating battery could also pose a risk of fire. Meanwhile, Google is offering a free battery replacement for select Pixel 4a that have experienced this sizeable battery performance dip.
