HP is Reportedly Acquiring the Intellectual Property and Humane's Technical Team but not the AI Pin Hardware
In November 2023 Former Apple designers officially introduced their first product called the Humane AI Pin. In April 2024, Engadget delivered a devasting AI Pin review and the one from Joanna Stern on X wasn't much better. The added US$24.99 service fee per month was the final nail in its coffin. And lastly, Mashable considered it one of three AI flops for 2024. In June 2024, the rumor of HP in talks with Humane surfaced on CNBC. A NY Times rumor claimed that HP could offer Humane US$1 billion for the company. .
Today we're learning that HP Inc. plans to acquire the Silicon Valley startup Humane, but the deal doesn't include its wearable artificial intelligence-powered clip on computer, known as the Ai Pin, according to Bloomberg.
HP is acquiring Humane's software platform and intellectual property for $116M, according to the report – a far cry from US$1 billion. HP also plans to retain most of its employees. However, Humane's Ai pin business is coming to an end. The Humane team is expected to form a new division at HP with the goal of implementing AI tech in HP's products.
The technology behind the pin was considered ahead of its time, and could be implemented into other products, which is what HP reportedly plans to do. Bloomberg.
There was no specific news about the founders and former Apple designers Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno joining HP. Perhaps that will be clarified should HP make the deal official, which it has not. No press release nor HP blog post has been made public yet.
