In a new supply chain report we learn that Apple is developing an oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) MacBook Air. This is the first time that an oxide TFT LCD has been applied to a MacBook Air.

According to The Elec, the parts industry revealed earlier today that Apple has been known to have started developing a MacBook Air with an oxide TFT LCD with its partners since the end of last year. The expected release date is 2027.

The MacBook series consists of the upper Pro lineup and the lower Air lineup. Apple applied oxide TFT LCD to the 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch MacBook Pro released in 2022, and amorphous silicon (a-Si) TFT LCD to the 13.6-inch and 15.4-inch MacBook Air. Oxide TFT has faster electron mobility than a-Si TFT. At that time, the MacBook Pro LCD light source was a mini light-emitting diode (LED).

Apple's development of an oxide LCD MacBook Air for a 2027 release appears to be intended to fill the gap left by the delayed release of the OLED MacBook Air. Apple had originally planned to release the OLED MacBook Pro in 2026, followed by the OLED MacBook Air around 2027. However, the release has been delayed.

An industry insider said, "Apple was planning to release the OLED MacBook Air around 2027, but since development has been delayed, they need to prepare a MacBook Air that can be sold in the meantime." Another insider predicted, "As of now, we can expect the OLED MacBook Air to be released around 2029."

LG Display is also expected to be the main supplier of oxide LCD MacBook Air panels. LCDs for Apple MacBooks have been supplied by LG Display and Sharp.

The OLED MacBook Pro, which is expected to be released in 2026, is planned to apply a two-tandem OLED with two light-emitting layers. The OLED MacBook Pro panel is likely to be supplied exclusively by Samsung Display.
