Samsung patents this week covered an XR Headset with adjustable lenses, SIM & more + smartphones with expandable displays
On November 25, Patently Apple posted a report titled "Samsung files for a new Patent in Europe for a Possible XR Headset to take on Apple Vision Pro." The patent pointed to several aspects of their future headset including the use of AI. This week, a couple of Samsung patent filings were published this week covering "Structures for Adjusting Distance between Lenses," for their XR Headset along with advanced wireless communications including the use of a SIM.
While Samsung's XR Headset patents focused on their XR Headset's adjustable lenses, I found it interesting the patents dedicated segments on headset's wireless standards that could be adopted witch includes a SIM.
Samsung's patent FIG. 1 below presents element #196 highlighted in yellow for the SIM and a Communications Module #190 highlighted in pink for both wired and wireless communication.
The wireless communication module #194 covers cellular communications, a short range wireless communications module, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 4 and 5G, global navigation satellite system (GNSS).
The headset may also include next-generation communication technology, e.g., new radio (NR) access technology. The NR access technology may support enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive machine type communications (mMTC), or ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC).
The wireless communication module #192 may also support a high-frequency band (e.g., the mmWave band) to achieve, e.g., a high data transmission rate. The wireless communication module may support various technologies for securing performance on a high-frequency band, such as, e.g., beamforming, massive multiple-input and multiple-output (massive MIMO), full dimensional MIMO (FD-MIMO), array antenna, analog beam-forming, or large scale antenna.

Samsung: Smartphone with Expandable Display
Last week two Samsung patents were published in the U.S. and Europe for a future smartphone that provides an expandable display. Samsung notes that in order for the user to easily carry an electronic device, the electronic device may be miniaturized. Although the electronic device is miniaturized, the need for the electronic device in which the size of a display for displaying a content may be changed is increasing so that a user may receive various contents through the electronic device.
Samsung's patent FIGS. 2A and 2C illustrate a smartphone's frontside having an expandable display; FIG. 2B and 2D illustrate the backside of the smartphone in expanded mode.

The concept may also make its debut at CES 2025 with Lenovo reportedly set to introduce the world's first notebook with an expandable display.
