A Persistent Rumor points to a new Backside Camera Design coming to Apple's 2025 iPhones

Late last month, MacRumors covered a report from The Information that claimed that the rear of the ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro Max would feature a "rectangular camera bump made of aluminum rather than traditional 3D glass," while the bottom half will continue to be made of glass to support wireless charging. The report also stated that the "iPhone 17 Air" currently has a "large, centered camera bump on its back" with a single camera.

This morning, a report from the Chinese tech site IT Home stated that a Chinese blogger, known as  "@数码闲聊站," stated " that supply chain materials show that the iPhone 17 series mobile phones "will indeed" be changed to a horizontal stripe three-camera layout as shown in the figure below (IT Home Note: According to the practice starting from the iPhone 11, the standard version has a dual camera and the Pro and above have a triple camera). The details of the lens arrangement are currently unknown, and the module has been changed to a " strip runway " design.

The blogger also revealed that "many new Android phones " will adopt this design next year.

Whether this rumor pans out or not, Apple's current backside cameras on their Pro models have been an eye sore of imbalanced design. The rumored design is superior. The credit really goes to Google's Pixel design team who began this horizonal camera design trend.

While it would definitely be refreshing to see the new design materialize on iPhones in 2025, only time will tell if this is simply wishful or the real deal.
