Apple was granted a series of design patents from Europe for CarPlay's "Instrument Clusters." Apple also filed for a new figurative trademark that interestingly emphasizes gaming.

Unlike "patent applications" that provide the public with an abstract, summary and details of an invention, design patents published around the world are limited to only providing the public with design patent figures. No additional specifics of the design are made available.

CarPlay – Instrument Cluster Design Patents

At the WWDC24 Ben Crick, human Interface Designer held a developer presentation titled "Say hello to the next generation of CarPlay Design System." The introduction stated: "Explore the design system at the heart of the next generation of CarPlay that allows each automaker to express their vehicle's character and brand. Learn how gauges, layouts, dynamic content, and more are deeply customizable and adaptable, allowing you to express your own design philosophy and create an iconic, tailored look. This session is intended for automakers, system developers, and anyone designing a system that supports the next generation of CarPlay."

Last week we reported on the first round of design patents related to CarPlay and on Friday Apple was awarded five new CarPlay patents relating to Instrument Clusters. In fact, the first one below is seen in our cover graphic from the WWDC24 developer keynote presented above.

Below are the two key designs, with the other three design patents being partial designs of the same two below. The granted designs came from Munich, Germany.
