Ross Young reveals that Apple’s M4 MacBook Pro Displays use Quantum Dot Technology

It’s being reported today by IT Home that Ross Young, co-founder and CEO of DSCC (now with Counterpoint) discovered that Apple’s new 2024 MacBook Pro uses quantum dot display technology. It’s a technology that Apple won at least two patents on thus far (01 and 02).

Ross stated that Apple used quantum dot film in the new MacBook Pro display to replace the red KSF fluorescent film, resulting in a brighter and more accurate display. It is said that Apple has been using KSF because it does not contain the toxic element "cadmium" and is more efficient and less costly.

In fact, as early as 2015, when Apple launched the first generation Retina MacBook Pro model, Apple executives said that quantum dot technology was considered at the time, but was rejected due to cadmium.

As suppliers have developed cadmium-free quantum dot display technology that can provide the same or even higher color gamut and better dynamic display effects as KSF, it is not surprising that Apple is turning to quantum dot display technology.
