Apple filed a series of new trademarks this week in the U.S., Hong Kong and Europe.

Smart Script

Apple filed for the ‘Smart Script’ trademark in Hong Kong this week under application number 306717763. It was filed under International Class 009 covering “Computers; handheld computers; tablet computers; computer hardware; telecommunications apparatus and instruments; mobile telephones; smartphones; wireless communication devices, computer stylus and more.

More Flexible Handwritten Notes with Smart Script: With the power of Apple Pencil, Smart Script makes handwritten notes fluid, flexible, and easier to read, all while maintaining the look and feel of a user’s personal handwriting. Smart Script allows users to write quickly without sacrificing legibility by smoothing and straightening handwritten text in real time. And it makes editing handwritten text just as simple as editing typed text. With Apple Pencil, users can easily add space, scratch out a sentence, or even paste typed text in their own handwriting, and the paragraph will automatically reflow to fit the new content.

New Figurative Trademarks

Apple has filed for two Figurative Trademarks in the U.S. this week as presented below.

Figurative Trademark #1 DockKit: Overview: “DockKit interfaces with DockKit-compatible motorized stands known as dock accessories to track the location of objects that appear in video frames. It determines how to best position the iPhone camera to frame and track objects, with improved person tracking using combined body and face tracking for human subjects. This feature, known as system tracking, automatically starts as soon as a person docks iPhone onto a compatible motorized stand and launches the Camera app. For example, system tracking is useful for content creators who want the camera to follow them while they move around their space, or instructors on a video call who are walking around a classroom.”  

Apple filed their trademark in the U.S. under application number 98835577. Apple filed it under International Class 009 that covers “Scientific, nautical, surveying, electric, photographic, cinematographic, optical, weighing, measuring, signaling, checking (supervision), life-saving and teaching apparatus and instruments; apparatus for recording, transmission or reproduction of sound or images; magnetic data carriers, recording discs; automatic vending machines and mechanisms for coin-operated apparatus; cash registers, calculating machines, data processing equipment and computers; fire-extinguishing apparatus. - Scientific, nautical, surveying, electric, photographic, cinematographic, optical, weighing, measuring, signaling, checking (supervision), life-saving and teaching apparatus and instruments; apparatus for recording, transmission or reproduction of sound or images; magnetic data carriers, recording discs; automatic vending machines and mechanisms for coin-operated apparatus; cash registers, calculating machines, data processing equipment and computers; fire-extinguishing apparatus.”

Figurative Trademark #2 for Apple’s “Image Playground.” Apple Filed their trademark  under application number 98824740. They filed it under International Class 009 which covers “Downloadable computer software for software development; downloadable computer software for use in messaging, note-taking, word processing, whiteboarding, creating and making presentations, and creating, editing, publishing, and sharing images, animation, sketches, drawings, and illustrations.” The also filed for this trademark in Europe (Belgium) under number 019103390.

Apple’s Image Playground: “Image Playground delivers an easy-to-use experience to create fun, playful images in apps like Messages, Notes, Keynote, Pages and more. Using the Image Playground API, you can add the same experience to your app and enable your users to quickly create delightful images using context from within your app. And because images are created entirely on device, you don’t have to develop or host your own models for your users to enjoy creating new images in your app.”

It should be noted that international trademark classes that Apple files their trademarks under are important as the trademark registration will only protect those classes that have been identified in their original application. In a legal battle, the classes filed for originally could make or break a legal case.
