Microsoft is working on new XR Headsets for 2026 that will use OLEDoS displays aimed at delivering streaming content, movies & games
It's been reported by The Elec that Samsung Display has agreed to supply micro-OLED display panels for Microsoft's display panels for their next-gen Mixed Reality devices.
Samsung Display recently signed a contract with MS to develop and supply micro-OLED, also known as OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon). The rumor claims that the Microsoft order is for hundreds of thousands of units.
Patently Apple noted in an IP report back in 2023 that Microsoft was attempting to clone Apple Vision Pro's EyeSight feature. This was one of the first clue that Microsoft was likely working on a next-gen XR type of headset beyond their failing HoloLens 2. A second form-factor was reported on back in June of this year. The use of micro-OLED displays clearly indicates a move away from the HoloLens form-factor.
An industry insider explained to The Elec that he understood that MS was making new devices for watching content such as games or movies rather than aiming for the "Metaverse" market. Microsoft is still in the early stages of this project that could take until 2026 before it hits the market.
