If Apple's share of hybrid OLED demand continues, it's expected that Samsung, LG & BOE will be able to sufficiently meet Apple's demand

A supply chain report from The Elec today states that Market research firm DSCC predicts that, "If Apple's demand continues to be absolute in the hybrid IT organic light-emitting diode (OLED) market, hybrid OLED production capacity will be sufficient to respond with the 6th generation lines of LG Display and Samsung Display that are already in operation, and the 8th generation lines of Samsung Display and BOE that are currently investing." Hybrid OLEDs are also known as Two-Stack OLED displays.

Hybrid OLED is a method that combines a thin film encapsulation (TFE) with a glass substrate. Apple first applied it to the OLED iPad Pro released in the first half of this year. Apple chose this method to avoid parts of the screen appearing wavy to consumers and to make the panel thinner. Apple emphasized that the OLED iPad Pro is "the thinnest of all products."

Hybrid OLEDs for iPads have been mass-produced on LG Display and Samsung Display’s 6th-generation lines since early this year. The 8th-generation OLED lines for IT from Samsung Display and BOE, which is currently investing, are also designed to produced Hybrid OLEDs.

DSCC forecasts that overall tablet hybrid OLED demand, led by Apple iPad, will increase to 20 million units per year in 2027-2028. It assumes that OLED iPads will be released this year, along with the two 13-inch and 11.1-inch Pro lineups, with an 8.4-inch model added in 2026. The 13-inch and 11.1-inch models are two-stack tandem OLEDs with two light-emitting layers, while the 8.4-inch model is a single-stack OLED product with one light-emitting layer.

Apple MacBook hybrid OLED demand is expected to increase from 2 million units in 2025 to 5 million units in 2026 and 7.5 to 8 million units per year in 2027 and 2028. If OLED models are added to the MacBook lineup of 16.3-inch and 14.3-inch Pro models, MacBook OLED demand in 2027 and 2028 could exceed 10 million units per year.

If Apple's absolute share of hybrid OLED demand continues, it is expected that Samsung Display and BOE will be able to sufficiently meet Apple's demand by securing an 8th generation OLED line with a monthly capacity of 15K units, in addition to the 6th generation OLED lines with a monthly capacity of 15K units currently operated by LG Display and Samsung Display, respectively.
