In August 2021, Patently Apple posted a report titled "The U.S. Patent Office has Published Facebook's Patent behind their Future AR Glasses Wristband Input Device. Then in April 2024 we posted another Meta patent report titled " A series of new Meta patents cover their possible future Wristband device for XR Headsets + Smartwatch & Smartglasses." It was here where we got the first details of a possible future Meta Watch.

This week a new Meta Watch patent came to light in Europe relating to users being able to use a Meta Watch in conjunction with a modern blood pressure device to present users with digital details of their blood pressure data related to Systolic and Diastolic readings . If anything, it proves that Meta is looking for ways to challenge Apple devices, be it Apple Watch, true AR smartglasses or Vision Pro.

Meta's patent application covers techniques for obtaining blood pressure measurements. In some embodiments, a method involves obtaining a set of photoplethysmography (PPG) signals using a wearable device worn by a user; determining that a blood pressure of the user is being measured by a device unassociated with the wearable device based at least in part on the set of PPG signals; responsive to determining that the blood pressure of the user is being measured by the device unassociated with the wearable device, obtaining an indication of a blood pressure measurement obtained by the device unassociated with the wearable device; and storing the obtained indication of the blood pressure measurement for future use by the wearable device.

In some embodiments, a wearable device comprises at least one light emitter and at least one light detector; and a controller. The controller may be configured to: obtain a set of photoplethysmography (PPG) signals using the at least one light emitter and at least one light detector; determine that a blood pressure of a user wearing the wearable device is being measured by a device unassociated with the wearable device based at least in part on the set of PPG signals; responsive to determining that the blood pressure of the user is being measured by the device unassociated with the wearable device, obtain an indication of a blood pressure measurement obtained by the device unassociated with the wearable device; and store the obtained indication of the blood pressure measurement for future use by the wearable device.

In some embodiments, a method involves obtaining a set of photoplethysmography (PPG) signals using a wearable device worn by a user; determining that a blood pressure of the user is being measured by another device, based at least in part on the set of PPG signals and without communicating any data to or from the other device; responsive to determining that the blood pressure of the user is being measured by the another device, obtaining an indication of a blood pressure measurement obtained by the another device; and storing the obtained indication of the blood pressure measurement for future use by the wearable device.

In FIG. 1 below we see a possible future Meta Watch; FIG. 3 is a flowchart of an example process for obtaining an indication of a blood pressure measurement.

Meta's patent FIG. 4 above is an example of a user interface for prompting a user to enter a blood pressure measurement; and FIG. 5 is a simplified block diagram of an example of a computing system that may be implemented as part of a user device.

For details, review Meta's patent application in Europe (20240225459). The U.S. version hides that fact that it's a Meta patent. Many companies, including Apple, use this tactic of filing a patent only under the engineers names to avoid an invention from being found under the company name to keep it off the media's radar / or radar. In Europe, it appears that companies must reveal the owners name. In this particular case, the European patent filing lists Meta Platforms Technologies, LLC .
