Apple is reportedly developing mechanical hardware to adjust the camera aperture that could be ready for the iPhone 17 at the earliest
According to a new supply chain report, technology media site The Information published a blog revealing that Apple is developing a mechanical aperture solution , which is expected to be deployed on the iPhone 17 series as early as possible.
Apple is reportedly developing mechanical hardware that will allow users to manually adjust the aperture of the iPhone . Users can manually adjust the aperture to control the depth of field effect, so that the subject remains in focus while the background becomes blurred.
IT Home notes that Apple has already introduced this effect in the iPhone’s portrait mode, but the effect is adjusted and optimized by AI algorithms , while manual mechanical hardware means it will bring more playability to iPhone users.
Portrait mode sometimes has trouble separating subjects in the foreground and background, and the mechanical hardware fixes this.
Sources said that the mechanical aperture solution is currently under development and may be equipped on the iPhone 17 series released in September 2025 at the earliest, and may be limited to iPhone 17 Slim/Ultra products.
