Apple and Huawei are in a tight race in 'Mainland' China for Tablets While Macs fell sharply in Q1-24
In late February we posted a tablet report for Q4-23 in China titled "Tablet Fans in China Rejoice in Huawei Beating Out Apple as Tablet King in Q4 2023 … by a Hair's Breadth." A breadth within a margin of error, to be sure. Today, an analytical report for tablets in Q1-24 illustrates how Huawei's moment grew by 88% while Apple fell by 3% giving year-over-year. Huawei is noted as having 29% vs. Apple's 27% as presented in the chart by Canalys below.
The only problem with the Canalys Chart above is that tablet shipments are limited to "Mainland China," leaving Hong Kong tablet shipments out of the equation. Hong Kong is an affluent market that usually favors Apple devices. So leaving Hong Kong stats out of the equation puts Apple's iPad at a disadvantage. This is becoming a trend in analytical reports which distorts the true top 5 tablet vendors.
Apple updated their iPad line-up in May (01 and 02) and this should translate well for Apple in Mainland China in Q2-24.
On the PC front in Mainland China, PC shipments fell by 12% with notebooks down 13% and desktops falling 11%. In this segment, no vendor showed annual growth. US based HP fell by 24% while Apple fell 21%. Huawei was the only company at 0% annual growth.
