Apple has acquired DarwinAI and their patented Explainable AI (XAI) platform that has been adopted by numerous Fortune 500 Companies
Apple Inc. has acquired artificial intelligence startup DarwinAI from Waterloo Ontario, Canada, adding technology to its arsenal ahead of a big push into generative AI in 2024.
The iPhone maker purchased the business earlier this year, and dozens of DarwinAI’s employees have joined Apple’s artificial intelligence division
Alexander Wong, an AI researcher at the University of Waterloo who helped build the business, has joined Apple as a director in its AI group as part of the deal.
The under-the-radar acquisition comes ahead of a big AI push for Apple this year. The company is adding features to its iOS 18 software that rely on generative AI, the technology behind ChatGPT and other groundbreaking tools. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has promised that Apple will “break new ground” in AI this year, and an announcement is expected as soon as the company’s worldwide developers conference in June. A note on their LinkedIn site covered an article about Festo, a global leader in automation technology, and the world market leader in technical training and education. Festo had been conducting joint research with the “Karlsruher Institut für Technologie” (KIT) and partners from Canada – University of Waterloo and Darwin AI. The partners investigated how robots can learn from each other without sharing their training data. This approach – called “federated learning” – allows to develop more robust and efficient AI than it would be possible with data from just one robot – without handing out sensitive company data. At the completion of the project, all project participants – as well as the interested public – were on site in Esslingen-Berkheim, Germany, or presented their results live from Canada.
Another note on their LinkedIn site states: "Introducing DarwinAI, a true pioneer in the industry 4.0 world. Their cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence Defect Detection Solution is revolutionizing the manufacturing landscape.
What's the big deal? By harnessing the power of AI, DarwinAI is digitizing the "last mile" of quality assurance in PCBA, eliminating the need for manual inspection and boosting productivity and accuracy for manufacturers. You could review one of DarwinAI's 2023 presentations here.
