Rumor: The 2024 Apple Watch will introduce a basic form of Blood Pressure monitoring while a more sophisticated system is still in the works
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has been reporting on the possible addition of a blood pressure monitor for Apple Watch going back at least to April 2022. Patently Apple also began covering blood pressure related patents beginning at that same time with others having been published since then (01, 02, 03 and more).
Today, Mark Gurman is back with his latest rumor on the matter. Gurman notes that Apple plans to introduce a new paid health service alongside a blood pressure sensor and a system for detecting sleep apnea in the Apple Watch next year.
The paid health coaching service could provide a new area for Apple to develop recurring subscription revenues. The app will reportedly recommend workouts, presumably through its paid Fitness+ app, and eating plans.
Apple’s blood pressure sensor will reportedly detect when a user’s blood pressure is elevated, though it won’t show their exact measurements. Apple is working on introducing specific diastolic and systolic metrics in a future watch, the report said. Source.
For the record, Apple competitor Xiaomi unveiled a new blood pressure monitoring system for their latest smartwatch last week. Their promotional video for this is only available in Chinese. Five other smartwatches that currently provide blood pressure monitoring could be found here.
Earlier today, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman posted an in-depth report titled "Apple Has Plans to Eventually, Maybe Revolutionize Health Care," that you could read in its entirety here.
