Qualcomm introduces new 'Snapdragon X' branding for next-gen PC platforms that are designed to challenge Apple's M-Series powered Macs
In November 2022 Patently Apple posted a report titled "Qualcomm announced the Branding of their 2023 Processors that are aimed at Challenging Apple's Chip Leadership: Qualcomm Oryon." They Oryon team is in fact a group of top-tier engineers that had left Apple to start their own company called NUVIA. The leader, Gerard Williams was the mastermind behind Apple's A-Series processors. When Apple launched a lawsuit against the new startup, Qualcomm stepped in to acquire them. The ex-Nuvia team has since been developing new processors to take on Apple's M-Series. The new chips were to be branded Oryon.
Late yesterday, Qualcomm posted a press release titled "Introducing an all-new naming convention for our next-generation of intelligent PC platforms: The Snapdragon X Series." The new chips will be powered by the Oryon CPU.
Qualcomm confirmed that the new processors will hit the market in 2024 and deliver a quantum leap forward in performance and power efficiency will anchor Snapdragon X and — when combined with our NPU (Neural Processor) — will deliver accelerated on-device user experiences for the new era of generative AI.
Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit will be held in Maui, Hawaii between October 24-26 where they will reveal more details about the Oryon CPU powering their new Snapdragon X series processors. The keynote will be held on the 24th.
