In Q2, Japan's Smartphone market declined for the fifth consecutive Quarter with Apple retaining its commanding lead
On August 31, a new analytical report from IDC Japan noted that smartphone shipments in Japan have dropped for five consecutive quarters, with Q2 dropping 11.7% compared to Q2 2022.
In terms of operating systems, in Q2 iOS (iPhone) shipments dropped by 15.3% compared to the same period last year to 3.33 million units, shrinking for the fourth consecutive quarter.
Android smartphone shipments shrank by 8.3% to 3.91 million units, a decrease for the fifth consecutive quarter. The shrinking rate of iPhone Q2 is much higher than that of Android phones – though this is typical prior to new iPhones emerging in September.
Looking at the situation of individual smartphone manufacturers, in Q2 Apple continued to maintain its leading position in Japanese smartphones with a market share of 45.9%. Google’s smartphone shipments increased significantly with a market share of 15.4%, leaping into second place followed by Samsung with 8.0%), FCNT with 7.9% and Sony with 6.7%. J
Japan's FCNT filed for bankruptcy in late May mainly due to the intensified competition in smartphone sales, coupled with the depreciation of the Japanese yen, the global chip shortage and other factors, resulting in a rapid increase in costs and expenses, resulting in a sharp deterioration in profitability and capital allocation.
In addition to FCNT filing for bankruptcy, Japan's Kyocera also stated that it will withdraw from the consumer smartphone market by the end of March 2025.
