According to a new supply chain report, Samsung Display is expected to provide Apple with four times the display over LG Display by the end of this year. Secondly, the folded zoom production yield issue, which was the cause of the iPhone 15 Pro Max production delay, was recently found to have been resolved to a significant extent.

The quantity of OLED for the four iPhone 15 models that Apple will purchase by the end of this year is as follows:

  • Regular (6.1 inch) low to mid 20 million units
  • Plus (6.7 inch) 10 million units
  • Pro (6.1 inch) mid to high 20 million units
  • Pro Max (6.7 inches) is estimated at 40 million units.

Out of the expected volume of all four types of OLED, which is in the mid to high 90 million to 100 million units, the proportion of the two Pro lineup products is well over 60%.

Further to report from The Elec, they note that Samsung Display is expected to deliver approximately 70 million units of OLED for the four iPhone 15 series by the end of this year. Samsung Display's OLED volume by model is estimated to be in the low 20 million units for the two lower lineups (normal and plus), 9 to 10 million units for Pro, and low to mid 30 million units for Pro Max.

BOE hopes to receive approval for mass production of the iPhone 15 standard OLED next month. At this time, the volume that BOE can expect is 5 million units by the end of the year. Depending on whether mass production is approved, some of the 5 million units may be transferred to Samsung Display. BOE aimed to supply OLED models for the iPhone 15 standard and Plus two models this year, but reportedly decided that it would be difficult to deliver the Plus OLED by the end of this year.

LG Display supplies OLED only to the two iPhone 15 series Pro lineup. The volume that LG Display is expected to deliver to Apple by the end of this year is in the mid-20 million units, including △ late 10 million units of Pro and 7 to 9 million units of Pro Max.

Meanwhile, it was found that the folded zoom production yield issue, which caused the production delay of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, has been largely resolved. The 15 Pro Max Folded Zoom uses Sony's image sensor, LG Innotek and Jahwa Electronics' anti-shake (OIS) actuator, and a Chinese company's prism, and LG Innotek completes the folded zoom module. In January 2023, Apple Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo Surprised the market with his prediction that BOE would overtake Samsung for iPhone 15 and 15 Pro Displays, Samsung sprung into action against BOE. On September 15, we posted a follow-up report titled "Samsung Display gets the upper hand against BOE Display in A Patent Dispute over 'Diamond Pixel' based OLED Displays." The lawsuits may have forced Apple to limit BOE to lower-end displays due to Samsung's patent war against BOE.
