Samsung announced they're preparing OLED Displays with 'Zero Bezel' that supports Under Display Camera
In late July, Patently Apple posted a report titled " Apple has challenged Samsung and LG Display to create a Bezel-less OLED Display that supports Cameras under the Display." Today we're learning that yesterday at the K-Display Business Forum presentation at COEX in Gangnam, Seoul, the managing director of Samsung Display Jung Yong-wook announced that it is preparing a 'zero bezel' concept product required to implement a full screen on the front of a smartphone. The new display supports an under-panel camera (UPC).
The reason for applying zero bezel is to increase user immersion, and UPC technology, which places the front camera module under OLED. Samsung noted that the camera under display technology still needs improvement. Whether the UPC technology will be timed for the new zero bezel displays is unknown at this time.
Yongwook Jeong, Senior Vice President, introduces a picture of Samsung Electronics' Galaxy and Apple iPhone designs evolving from notch to hole to zero bezel (all around full screen). The structure needs to be optimized. In order to realize zero bezel, 3D bonding and edge brightness control were presented as technical tasks.
Apple fans writing into Patently Apple made it clear that they hate the notch and now Dynamic Island. An under display camera for the iPhone would definitely be a feature wildly applauded.
Lastly, the report from The Elec also noted that Samsung touched on strengthening foldable phones and expects smartphones with a slidable display to be 2 to 3 years away. A video of a Samsung slide-out display smartphone concept could be viewed here. It's a concept that Apple has filed patents for as well, with one of them that could be viewed here. It could be an alternative to a foldable iPhone.
