Looking to the Future Popularity of the Apple Vision Pro, new OLEDoS Display Suppliers for Apple are entering the market
In March Patently Apple posted a report titled "While Apple's initial XR Headset displays will be supplied by LG & Sony, Samsung is developing a new OLEDoS display with APS Holdings." Then in May we posted a report titled " Samsung Secures advanced OLEDoS Technology for Future Apple XR Displays by Acquiring a U.S. Company." Then last Saturday, BusinessKorea posted a report last Saturday titled "Samsung, LG in Hot Pursuit of Sony in OLEDoS Displays." That report ended by noting that "Chinese companies such as BOE have also entered the OLEDoS market, which is bad news to Korean display makers."
Today, The Elec reports that "Display production equipment maker Sunic System stated on Tuesday that it will be supplying its deposition machine for OLED on silicon (OLEDoS) to Chinese display panel maker SeeYa. The deal is worth 32.2 billion won (US$25 million) and the contract will last until June of 2024.
OLEDoS is a micro-display that is touted for use in expanded reality devices. Sunic System’s machine is for white-OLED that uses color filters. As silicon is not transparent like glass used in conventional display panels, a different alignment technology is used when the organic material is deposited.
It supplied to SeeYa for the first time in 2018 through a deal worth 29.5 billion won. In 2020, it also supplied the machine to BOE for 27.6 billion won.
SeeYa is increasing its supply of OLEDoS to the market and is also reportedly aiming to supply the panels to Apple.
BOE is also using Sunic System’s deposition machine to supply OLEDoS. Sunic System has also supplied its kit to Samsung Display, which is planning to use it for research on RGB OLEDoS. For more, read the full report by The Elec.
While it'll take a few years for Apple to bring their Vision Pro headset to mass market levels, Apple is expected to offer a scaled set of headsets to market over time, much like the way Apple offers several versions of iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches. The volume of devices will at that time provide opportunities for Chinese OLEDoS suppliers to compete head-on with Korea's heavyweights Samsung and LG.
