In Q1, Apple's iPad Led the U.S. Market with Strong Growth while Macs suffered a tough quarter
On May 4, 2023, Apple's CEO Tim Cook noted during his opening commentary about the company's latest quarter stated that "The Mac, which recorded $7.2 billion in revenue for the March quarter was in line with our expectations. As we noted during our last call, Mac faced a very difficult compare because of the incredibly successful rollout of our M1 chip throughout the Mac lineup last year. And like our other product lines, Mac is facing some macroeconomic and foreign exchange headwinds as well."
So, what actually did that translate into? According to the latest report from Canalys, Apple came in fourth spot dropping from 16.7% market share in Q1 2022 to 15.1% in Q1 2023. The Mac's annual growth was -35.8%, the worst in the top five OEM list below.
Overall, PC shipments (desktops, notebooks and workstations) in the United States declined 28% year-on-year to 14.0 million units in the first quarter of 2023. Notebook (including mobile workstations) shipments fell 31% to 11.4 million units, while desktop (including desktop workstations) shipments were down 28% to 2.7 million units
Despite the short-term struggle, Canalys anticipates a market recovery on the horizon. US PC shipments in Q4 2023 are expected to grow 6% year-on-year while full-year shipments in 2024 are forecasted to be 13% higher than in 2023.
According to Canalys, tablets performed better than PC's in Q1, with shipments dropping just 7% to 10.8 million units, largely driven by Appleās strong iPad performance.
Apple was the leader once again and grew it's market share handsomely from 38.6% in Q1 2022 to 50.0% in Q1 2023 with annual growth at 20.5%. On the flipside, Amazon declined 25.7%, Microsoft declined -30.4% and Samsung declined -19.6%. Unfortunately the analysts over at Canalys provided no color whatsoever as to what iPad models did best in the quarter where Apple completely dominated.
