A debatable rumor claims that a second supplier for this year's iPhone 15 Periscope Lens has been identified
On March 30, 2023, Patently Apple posted a report titled "Apple will directly Switch to Lens Supplier Genius Electronic Optical for the iPhone 16 Periscope Camera Lens." The report noted that Apple supplier Largan is expected to be the sole lens supplier for this year’s iPhone 15 Pro Max periscope camera lens. Ming-Chi Kuo's research notes stated that Genius Electronic Optical will start supplying periscope lenses for the iPhone 16.
Smartphone lens module specialists Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) have been identified as potential suppliers for the next iPhone series that is expected to feature periscope lenses, according to industry sources.
Over the years, and prior to rumor reports began covering this subject, Patently Apple covered a series of folded camera/periscope camera lens system related patents (01, 02, 03, 04 and more). Last year Ming-Chi Kuo released extensive research notes on potential periscope lens suppliers for the iPhone 15.
This morning, a new Digitimes report states that "Smartphone lens module specialists Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) have been identified as potential suppliers for the next iPhone series that is expected to feature periscope lenses." Yet this was known last month based on Ming-Chi Kuo's research notes with added clarity to the matter.
A U.S. rumor report surfacing this morning claims that a new Digitimes report pointed to Genius as being an additional supplier for the iPhone 15 periscope lens. Though that's contrary to what the Digitimes report actually claimed regarding Genius as a "potential supplier" for the iPhone 15.
Kuo had pointed out last month that Genius would be taking over production of the periscope lens for the iPhone 16 from Largan. There was no mention of Genius playing a role in supplying lenses for the iPhone 15. Kuo's research delivers a more credible picture of what's happening in Apple's supply chain on this matter.
Though in the end, crystal ball predictions and rumors don't always pan out, regardless of the source. In the short term, it comes down to what sources you happen to trust.
