Zuckerberg's vision of the Metaverse Failed to Impress at Meta's Annual 'Connect' Event today and neither did their new $1,500 Headset
This morning Meta put on their annual 'Connect' event and it'll likely be the last time that I waste my time watching this Mickey Mouse event talking about what's coming 3 or 4 years down the road and looking at make believe prototypes that are laughable. Out of all the product events that I follow every year, Zuckerberg's is always the worst production filled with cartoon nonsense about the Metaverse. Above is Zuckerberg's likeness in his metaverse and if you're over 15 years old, this is not a virtual world worth being a part of.
That aside, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled his company’s newest virtual-reality headset today branded the Meta Quest Pro. Meta Platforms Inc. hopes the new device will entice creators and working professionals to adopt its vision for a virtual future.
The Meta Quest Pro is the company’s most recent headset in a product line previously branded as Oculus and includes a number of technological advancements from the company’s Quest 2 headset that was launched in late 2020.
It’s also much more expensive than its predecessor. The new device will cost $1,500, or three times the price of the Quest 2, in part because the company is targeting more serious working professionals. While Meta’s Quest 2 headset has sold an estimated 15 million units, many people still associate VR with gaming, a connection Meta seems to be trying to avoid in marketing its newest headset.
“It’s work focused,” Zuckerberg told a small group of reporters in Redmond, Washington, in late September. “The ideal customers for this [are] gonna be either people who just want the highest end VR device — so enthusiasts, prosumer type folks — or people who are trying to get work done.” You could read more about it here.
Below is one of the first reviews of the new headset by CNET. At one to two hours of battery life, it's difficult to see how this will impress anyone.
If you're a glutton for punishment, check out the long and boring keynote below.
Apple fans are definitely hoping for Apple to deliver Meta a knockout punch when their Mixed Reality Headset debuts in 2023. With the bar set so low for mixed reality by Meta, I don't think it'll take much from Apple to crush Meta's vision.
