Yesterday we reported that Apple's iPhone 14 Pro Max has rocketed to the best selling model, surpassing the iPhone 13 Pro Max launched last year. With that news, it's not surprising to learn this morning that Samsung Display is expected to gain more orders for the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED panels used in the top-tier iPhone 14 models. Samsung rivals aren't to participate in the increase in high-end display orders due to low yield rate issues, according to a new supply chain report.
According to The Elec, "Samsung Display had ordered more equipment from its suppliers to expand its production capacity in preparation. The new equipment is to be delivered to their Vietnam facility.
The suppliers will deliver optical clear resin depositors, edge light blocking materials and laser etchers, respectively.
Samsung Display has increased its iPhone OLED shipment goal from the previous 130 million units to 149 million units from the increased demand from Cupertino.
The biggest change in display panel is found in Apple's iPhone 14 Pro Max which sports an LTPO TFT with a hole display panel."
With China's BOE gaining orders for Apple's iPhone 14, we learned earlier this month that Samsung decided to make life difficult for BOE by transferring their LCD patent to China's CSOT. Sources believe that it's very possible that the patents will allow CSOT to sue BOE and keep them tied up in litigation.
Samsung Display also owns shares in CSOT and the Chinese company is a key supplier of LCD panels to Samsung Electronics. A united front between Samsung and CSOT against BOE makes sense as the Chinese company has fast risen in recent years as the largest LCD maker and is aggressively attempting to expand its shares in OLED for smartphones."
A total of 577 patents in the US were given to CSOT, which bought Samsung Display’s LCD factory in Suzhou, China in 2020.
