A Key CarPlay Instrument Cluster patent provides us with a Deep Dive into how it will be customized for Drivers & more
On September 06, Patently Apple posted an IP report titled "Apple has Won a Patent for their next-gen 2023 CarPlay interface with Dashboard Clusters for Vehicles and beyond. Today the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple that provides us with a deep dive into CarPlay 2023 that could include an instrument panel in certain car models. The patent covers a lot of territory of how the customization of the vehicle's instrument cluster will be set with an iPhone to choose colors and instrumentation to be shown, as presented below.
In Apple's patent FIG. 12A below, we see computer system #600A transmits information to display screen #600C that defines an appearance of the vehicle instrument cluster. As a result, the display screen displays a vehicle instrument cluster and display screen #600B displays a user interface, such as application icons and/or user interfaces of applications. The computer system also displays a user interface, such as application icons and/or user interfaces of applications.
In patent FIG. 12A above we see an instrument cluster, including navigational element, is displayed on display screen #600C. A position (e.g., with respect to dashboard #602 and/or display screens #600C and/or #600B) of steering wheel #1200 is determined (by a computer system of display screen 600C and/or computer system 600A).
Based on the position of the steering wheel, the instrument cluster displayed on display screen #600C is optionally modified. In some embodiments, the modification to the instrument cluster displayed on display screen is to reduce, minimize, and/or avoid the instrument cluster being occluded by the steering wheel from a driver's perspective.
In some embodiments, the modification to the user interface is based on: a position of the steering wheel, a position of a driver's seat, physiological parameters (e.g., height) of user, and/or a shape of the display on which the user interface (e.g., instrument cluster include directional element #636D, the user interface and/or user interface displayed on computer system 600A) is displayed.
In some embodiments, the modification is one or more of: a shift (e.g., left, right, up, down) in display position of the user interface (or some of the elements of the user interface), a change in the distance between user interface elements (e.g., pushing elements closer together), and/or a change in size of the user interface (or some of the elements of the user interface).
