Samsung set to unveil next-gen Galaxy Fold devices on August 10th while continuing their work on future Mixed Reality Smartglasses
Samsung Electronics on Wednesday sent out invites to the 2022 Galaxy Unpacked event for its new foldable phones that will be held online via its official website at 10 p.m. (Korea time) on Aug. 10.
Titled “Unfold Your World,” the event will feature Samsung’s latest Z series, including the larger Z Fold 4 and the more compact Z Flip 4, along with its smart watch Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Buds wireless earphones.
According to The Korea Herald, “both foldable models are projected to have reduced size and weight, with the durability of the hinges being improved. The Z Flip, in particular, is expected to come with a larger outside display and longer battery life.
The two phones are also expected to become the first phones here to support two numbers on a single phone, good news for people carrying different phones for business and personal use.
The market for foldable phones is still in its earlier stages, with its shipments making up only 1 percent of the overall smartphone sales globally. Samsung is aiming to double shipments in 2022."
Patently Apple’s other IP site, Patently Mobile, began following Samsung’s folding device patents in 2012 prior to any media coverage. Following that tread early eventually translated to the first Galaxy Fold device debuting in 2019.
Another device trend emerging over the last few years at Samsung has been mixed reality smartglasses. And like foldable devices, Samsung is hoping to beat Apple to market. Patently Apple discovered Samsung’s latest patent filing on this future device in Europe this week.
The emphasis in this Samsung patent covers an input area on the side arms of the glasses wherein a user’s finger motion is tracked on a series of protrusion structures (#140) acting as a controller.
Samsung’s patent FIG. 8 below illustrates some of the components being considered for their mixed reality smartglasses.
