Is Apple/Claris planning to Drop the “FileMaker” Brand?

Claris International Inc., formerly FileMaker Inc., is a computer software development company formed as a subsidiary company of Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) in 1987. In 1998, the company divested itself of all but its flagship product, and reformed as FileMaker Inc. In 2019, FileMaker Inc. announced at DevCon that it was restoring the Claris brand name.

This week Apple/Claris International filed for two new trademarks relating to the Claris product line. The first trademark application is for Claris Pro while the second is for Claris Studio. The branding of “FileMaker” appears nowhere on the applications.

Both trademarks were officially filed under “Claris International” that is located at Apple’s HQ at One Apple Park Way. At present, the Claris website doesn’t reflect or make mention of either of the new trademarks. It’s unknown at this time when Claris intends to bring these new trademarks representing software and software as a service to market officially.

Trademark: Claris Pro

The Claris Pro trademark, filed under application # 97447405, was published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last Tuesday.

It should be noted that international trademark classes that Apple files their trademarks under are important as the trademark registration will only protect those classes that have been identified in their original application. In a legal battle, the classes filed for originally could make or break a legal case.
