A rumor surfacing today supports past reports that Apple is working to deliver advanced camera zoom functionality by 2023
Back in October 2021 Patently Apple posted a report titled "LG Innotek reportedly secures a deal with Apple for a future Periscope Lens for iPhone while advancing Liquid Lens Technology." The report stated that LG Innotek, Apple's largest partner in the field of optics, had started the project for an Innotek folded camera for new Apple iPhones in the 2022-2023 time line. The report also explained the delay in Apple's endeavor to deliver a periscope camera that will deliver superior zoom capabilities.
Apple has patents on record (01, 02, 03 and 04) that could workaround Samsung patents, though Apple could simplify matters by simply licensing the required patents if need be to remove this snag in finalizing a plan for a folded camera lens with LG Innotek.
Last week two new camera patent applications were published by the U.S. Patent Office relating to a telephoto lens system as listed below:
20220091373 - Optical System for Telephoto Cameras
20220091398 - Telephoto Camera with a Stationary Optics Assembly (FIGS. 1A&B below)
So the rumor surfacing today from analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities about Apple delivering a new telephoto or periscope lens solution for their 2023 iPhone isn't really anything new. Though it's always good to learn that Apple's advanced camera lens project is still on course.
