A rumor report published today points to Apple extending their mini-LED backlighting currently used for their high-end MacBook and iPad Pro models to the next-gen 13.3 MacBook Air launching in 2022.

MacBook Air shipments are estimated at 5.5-6.0 million units globally in 2021, and shipments for miniLED-backlit models are expected to rise to about 8.0 million units in 2022, the sources forecast.

In addition, sources told Digitimes that miniLED backlighting is also likely to be adopted for 11-inch iPad Pro.

A second rumor about the 2022 MacBook Air came via leaker Dylandkt who Tweeted that "The upcoming MacBook (Air) will release in the middle of 2022. It will have MagSafe, a 1080p webcam, USB C ports, a 30W power adapter, and no fans. There will be color options similar to the iMac 24. The bezels and keyboard will be an off white with full sized function keys."

Dylan later admitted on his Twitter site that most of the info he shared was actually to corroborate what other leakers like Jon Prosser had predicted six months ago. So it's a rumor of a rumor rehashed and sprinkled with common sense – but still it's a rumor making the rounds on most Apple rumor sites today, go figure.

Even the Digitimes rumor report is based on "what's likely." Will Apple actually go to the expense of offering mini-LED to lower end MacBook Air in 2022? Only time will tell.
