Rumor claims that Apple is likely to shift iPads away from LCD to OLED beginning in 2022
A new Korean report is claiming that Apple will eliminate LCDs for iPads beginning in 2022. More specifically, OLED panels will begin to roll out on smaller models of iPad in 2022, making them the first iPad offerings that will not use any type of LCD.
The report further noted that the OLED panels for 2022 iPads will be sourced from Samsung and LG. The new displays will improve image quality, weight and design.
To meet the demands of around 50 million iPads shipped every year, the suppliers will have to increase their production capacity.
The new OLED based iPads will be phased in so as to handle production, with the iPad Pro likely to adopt OLED sometime in 2023.
Whether Apple made the decision to switch to OLED due to mounting issues with mini-LED with ghosting or blooming, as shown below, is unknown at this time. A recent report noted that "blooming isn't noticeable in games, movies, and other dynamic scenes. You'll often need to look for it to find it. Remember, it's most noticeable in high contrast and high brightness scenarios. No one's usually looking at their screen on 100% brightness when the room is pitch dark." MacRumors reported on this issue as well on May 24.
While it's a minor issue, Apple may have decided to go with next-gen OLED to avoid production issues and more. Then again, we may need to wait and see a second supply chain report on the iPad Pro switching away from mini-LED to confirm that the switch to OLED extends to that model.
