On Friday, the Hong Kong Patent and Trademark Office granted Apple two design patents for their new iPad Air. In the U.S. Apple filed for three trademarks. More specifically, Apple filed two trademark applications covering "There's an App Clip for That," and one trademark filing for the font "SF Arabic." In addition, Apple's trademark for "MagSafe Charger" is now a Registered trademark.

Design Patents: iPad Air

Apple was granted two design patents yesterday for the iPad Air by the Hong Kong Patent Office. Apple filed their design under Locarno Classifications 14-01, 02 and 03 which covers: 01 - "Equipment for the recording or reproduction of sounds and pictures"; 02 – Tablets, touch screens, and data processing equipment"; and 03 – Telecommunication equipment and more.

Below is the Hong Kong Patent Office's "Registered" design patent status form for the iPad Air. A part of the form that isn't shown indicates that the designs are now protected until 24-02-2026.

Below are the design patent figures for iPad Air. Unlike "patent applications" that provide the public with an abstract, summary and details of an invention, design patents published around the world are limited to only providing the public with design patent figures. No additional specifics of the design are made available.

This Week's Trademark Filings+

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published a series of Apple's trademark filings this week. The first covers "SF ARABIC," a new font in beta as noted in Apple's "specimen" page including with their filing below. The trademark was filed under Class 009 covering: "downloadable computer software for generating, displaying, and printing fonts."

With this specific trademark filing Apple has provided the U.S. Patent Office with a "Specimen," as presented below. The U.S. Patent Office defines a specimen as being an example of how a company is actually using their trademark in the marketplace with the goods or services in their application.

Trademark: "There's an App Clip for That"

The second trademark filing published this week was for "There's an App Clip for that." In February 2009 Apple released "There's an App for That" ad campaign with a video of it below.

This week Apple filed for two trademarks that represents a twist to their 2009 ad, with "There's an App Clip for That."

The first TM application was filed under International Class 009 and the second application filed under International Class 042 as outlined below:

Although Apple states "There's an App Clip for That' in their ad below, it wasn't an official trademark when it was first released. Obviously Apple now wants to have this as an official trademark as proven by last week's trademark filings.

 MagSafe Charger: Now a Registered Trademark

Lastly, Apple's trademark for MagSafe Charger has been granted "Registered" status this week under number 6,389,155 as presented below. The trademark was filed under International Class 009 covering: "Charging mats for use with smartphones; charging apparatus for use with mobile telephones; wireless chargers for mobile telephones; mobile phone chargers."
