Apple Invents a new Color-Shifting Finish for possible Future iPhones that Oppo has today

1 X cover oppo color shifting technology

Today the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple that relates to textured transparent layers and associated coatings that provide color-shifting optical properties in electronic devices like an iPhone. It's a finish that Oppo has on their latest Reno5 Pro 5G model.

Such a finish was recently surfaced in a new smartphone from China's Oppo that was reviewed by Unbox Therapy on January 18th. The video below is set to start when Lewis Hilsenteger reviews the finish and color changing aspects of the phone.

According to Apple, the rear wall of an iPhone may also have a surface that faces the interior of the housing. Structures in the electronic device such as the display cover layer and rear housing wall may be formed from transparent glass layers.

Coatings may be formed on the inwardly facing surfaces of the transparent glass layers. The transparent glass layers may have textured surfaces opposite the inwardly facing surfaces that allow light at high viewing angles to pass into the glass layers and be reflected by the underlying coatings. In this way, optical properties of the housing may change when viewed by a user at different viewing angles.

Apple's patent FIG. 4 below is a cross-sectional side view of a textured glass layer having a reflective coating with desired color-shifting properties.
