Apple Complies with new law in France by adding a new 'Repairability Index' when buying iPhones and Macs from Apple Online

According to France's MacGeneration blog, Apple has started adding a new 'Repairability Index' to iPhone and Mac on their online store pages when the total of the price has been presented to the user.  The score provides users with a 0-10 score on how easy it will be to repair a device, much like how iFixit has done for years. Patently Apple's cover graphic is from a screenshot that we took this morning from Apple France. The image was adjusted to illustrate the repairability index feature prominently.

 

According to MacGeneration's Mickaƫl Bazoge, "The range of iPhone 12 (mini, 12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max) gets a score of 6. The index of the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro is much worse (4.6), and it is still lower for the iPhone 11 Pro Max with 4.5, just like the iPhone XR for that matter. The iPhone XS Max and XS have a rating of 4.6 and 4.7, respectively. The iPhone SE 2 fared much better at 6.2, while the iPhone 8/8 Plus and iPhone 7 Plus registered a score of 6.6. The top rated model is the iPhone 7, with 6.7.

 

Apple also lists the Macs affected by this repairability index, in this case only laptops: the 16-inch MacBook Pro gets a score of 6.3, the MacBook Air M1 6.5, the 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 of 5.6. Other models are also listed on the support sheet  ; on the other hand, Apple's products are not yet included in the official list , next to devices from Xiaomi, Samsung or OnePlus.

 

The Repairability Index "covers five product categories: smartphones, laptops, lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners and washing machines (more categories will follow). Five main criteria are used to establish the repairability index:

 

  • the availability of documentation (for repair, use and maintenance as well as the period during which this information is made available);
  • disassembly (how easily it is done, how easy it is to access parts, what tools are required, how the parts are secured in the device);
  • spare parts (period of availability and delivery times);
  • the price of spare parts (compared to new);
  • the software updates available, the offer of remote technical assistance free of charge and the possibility of resetting your device in a software way.
