Microsoft has won 8 Design Patents covering the Xbox Series S Console and Game Controllers that cover those for VR Gaming
Last week Microsoft was granted 8 design patents that covered their 'Xbox Series S' console and game controllers. One game controller, as presented as our cover graphic, appears to be offering a possible future two-tone controller. The other controller design patent covers VR handsets with right and left controllers having different control button configurations.
Xbox Game Controller
Microsoft was granted design patent D905,169 last week for a "Game Controller" which is an Xbox game controller. The design presents itself as a two-tone design. Considering that Microsoft sells their game controller in black, white and blue, it's viewed that Microsoft may be considering a two-tone design. Unfortunately design patent don't provide any specifications that could clear up the color issue. Design patents basically provide designs and that's about it. Interpret the design as you wish; we choose to view it as a possible future two-tone option.
You could review Microsoft's second design patent D905,168 for the Xbox game controller here that only presents a partial-design.
The design patents were originally filed in August 2019 and don't include the "share" button found on the most recent controllers as highlighted below. The design does present a new slanted button that is unexplained. Whether that's to replace the share button is unknown at this time.
Microsoft VR Game Controller
Microsoft was also granted a series of four design patents last week simply titled "Game Controller." This series of patents cover a VR game controller. The patent figures presented below are specifically from Design Patent D905,164. They represent the full design of the handsets.
The other three designs patents in the series present only partial-designs under numbers D905,165, D905,166 and D905,167. You could check out the latter patent so that that you could see what a partial design looks like. In these three design patents, Microsoft is adding additional protection for specific parts of the design. Any part of the design that is presented in dotted-lines isn't protected.
Xbox Series S
Lastly, Microsoft was granted design patent D905,161 last week covering their entry-level Xbox console marketed as the 'Xbox Series S.' Below is a photo of the Xbox Series S with their design patent figures below it.
