Yesterday Patently Apple posted a report titled "Apple Wins Third Eye-Tracking Patent this Year Relating to a Head-Mounted Display System." Patently Apple has posted over 30 patent reports relating to both mixed reality headsets and glasses for 2019 alone that you could review here. Our cover graphic is from an Apple patent that we covered back in August 2019 titled "Apple advances a Mixed Reality Headset with Hand, Body, Positional and Environmental Tracking Technologies."
Apple's many patents may finally translate into at least one mixed reality headset in the first half of 2020 according to a note from TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, CNBC reports. Like the iPad or iPhone, Apple could technically turn wearable headsets into a category with different styles of headware device
More than likely, the timing of such a product could translate to being Apple's WWDC 2020 where developers and Apple fans get to see new ideas and products.
The report further noted that "Apple is working with third-party brands on the AR glasses and will unveil them in the first half of 2020, according to Kuo. Other companies, like Facebook, are partnering with third party companies such as Ray-Ban, to produce similar headsets."
Patently Apple covered this in a report titled "While Facebook missed the Smartphone Revolution, they're now banking on Smart Glasses being the Next Great Device Trend."
Lastly, the CNBC report pointed to the fact that "Apple has put a lot of investment into augmented reality, which already works on most iPhones and iPads launched in the last few years. Augmented reality glasses allow people to overlay digital information on top of the real world, but haven’t become popular since they’re typically very bulky and don’t look like normal glasses."
The CNBC report linked to a Chinese website "MyDrivers" in their report that reportedly covers Kuo's note. Kuo is known in China as Guo Mingyi. In that link a number of predictions are made for Q2 2020, such as a new MacBook (with a scissors foot keyboard).
Apple and third-party brand cooperation AR helmet will also be released. More specifically, Kuo/Guo also pointed out in his report that Apple will launch AR products (head-mounted AR devices will be mass-produced as soon as 4Q19), and it is expected that Apple will cooperate with third-party brands to launch AR helmets next year.
The report also points out that "Guo Minghao had predicted that the metal frame/chassis of the 5G iPhone in the second half of next year will be significantly increased due to the increase in processing procedures and the integration of composite materials. Below is a chart with the predictions for Q4 2019 to Q3 2020.
