Apple's FaceID Sensor Supplier AMS Provides an Upbeat Outlook for Q3 and beyond

1 x COVER - ams Sensing is Life

Earlier today it was reported that European chip stocks traded higher Tuesday after Apple supplier AMS reported strong second-quarter sales and an upbeat outlook in its consumer business.

Shares of AMS, which provides 3D sensors for Apple’s FaceID technology as well as for Android devices, surged as much as 9% after the company said it expects revenue to reach $600-$640 million in the third quarter from its second quarter current revenue of $415 million.

According to the CNBC report, the Austrian chipmaker said it expects growth will be driven by "high volume ramps for smartphone sensing solutions."

The analyst in the video below states that 45% of the company's sales come from Apple and so it's a positive sign for Apple.

Earlier this month it was made known that ams and SmartSens are partnering on 3D and Near Infrared (NIR) Sensors.

The company noted that the collaboration complements ams’ strategic approach to further broaden its portfolio for all three 3D technologies – Active Stereo Vision (ASV), Time-of-Flight (ToF) and Structured Light (SL) – while accelerating time to market for a more differentiated set of new products.

To quickly meet an expected increasing demand for 3D sensing solutions in mobile devices, the partnership’s initial focus will be on 3D Near Infrared (NIR) sensors for facial recognition and applications requiring a high Quantum Efficiency (QE) in the NIR range (2D and 3D).

The reference design will enable high performance depth maps for payment, face recognition and AR/VR applications at a highly competitive total system cost.

Stéphane Curral, Executive Vice President for the Division Image Sensor Solutions at ams stated that "This collaboration with SmartSens in Image Sensors brings customers the benefit of a faster time to market for 3D Active Stereo Vision and Structured Light applications in mobile phones and other devices including IoT applications, based on ams’ industry leading 3D technology."
