If Apple needed 5G Chipsets, Samsung's System LSI Business is now Open for Business and Mass Producing them

Yesterday we reported on Verizon starting to roll out 5G in two U.S. cities. In that report we also noted that Timothy Arcuri had stated that Apple likely couldn't get an 5G iPhone to market until 2021 because Intel couldn't produce enough chips and that "getting 5G chipsets from other suppliers such as Samsung," would be unlikely. That story rang out around the globe. Today, Samsung contradicted that sentiment by basically putting a sign on their window saying "Open for Business," for modem chipsets.

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that its 5G communication solutions are in mass production for the latest premium mobile devices. The 5G multi-mode chipsets include the previously-introduced Exynos Modem 5100 as well as a new single-chip radio frequency transceiver, the Exynos RF 5500, and supply modulator solution, the Exynos SM 5800, all supporting 5G New Radio (5G-NR) sub-6-gigahertz (GHz) spectrum and legacy radio access technologies that provide mobile device manufacturers with optimum network communication solutions for the 5G era.

Inyup Kang, president of System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics: "Samsung has been an innovator in mobile communication technologies with a strong portfolio of market-proven solutions, and we are well-prepared to extend our leadership into 5GOur multi-mode solutions, the Exynos Modem 5100, Exynos RF 5500 and Exynos SM 5800 will together enable powerful yet energy-efficient 5G performance along with the network versatility that allows users to stay connected wherever they are."

Samsung LSI Business became an independent business unit in 2017 in order to better service customers. So when they offer new modems, it's not for just Samsung but for customers outside of Samsung.

They're making it as clear as day that they're producing 5G modems in mass production and I'm sure, if Apple wanted to buy 5G chipsets, it would be done, period.

In the end, the notion that Apple won't have a 5G iPhone until 2021 because they can't get enough chips seems like hogwash to me.
